Trimming another........................ from Exuberant Color

My 9 patch quilt was next in line to be trimmed. This one is smaller than the 16 patch with many of the same fabrics.

It is all trimmed and ready to choose a binding. Looking at the front and back together, I think a medium brown or rusty brown might be best. I need 7 strips so I need to find a piece that is at least 1/2 yard.

More pinwheels......................... from Exuberant Color

I did outside work in the middle of the day yesterday. I finished cutting down all of the peonies, cut small trees, and picked up fallen branches. Then it was time to sew. There were duplicates of some of these too. I counted all of the pinwheels. There are 25 eight inch, 7 six inch, 29 four inch and 5 three inch. Pinwheels are fun................. from Exuberant Color

I cut more triangles while I was in the basement doing laundry. Shown here are 8", 6", 4" and 3" pinwheels. There are 2 of most of them. I have a few more cut ready to sew tonight.

Making pinwheels was more fun than hand stitching so I only did 58". That is 2 sides done and 22" on a third side. The top was 72" x 88" before quilting so it's probably and inch or so smaller now. That leaves about 50" to stitch on one edge and 88 on the last one. I figure 2 more days ...

I cut 2 of the Marcia Derse plaid fabrics for the pinwheels. I made 2 of each of these combinations. I'm going to use most of the duplicates in a separate project.

I got 2/3 of a long side of binding hand sewn. If I keep up this pace I'll get it done this month.

Larger pinwheels................ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I got letters ready to mail and made a shopping list. I did the grocery shopping and the fun part, putting it all away. Then I went out and cut down a few peonies. I'm doing a few a day and hope to get them all done this week while the weather is nice.

I had a change of plans after reading Kathy's comment yesterday. She said How about pinwheels? I have been planning to do a pinwheel quilt at some point so this was the perfect start.

Last night I sewed 27 little 4" pinwheels with all 4 segments matching. I will now make a few more with some 2 and 2 sections.

Trimming................... from Exuberant Color

I was going to prepare the layers of a small quilt for basting on my large table in the basement when I remembered I still needed to trim this 16 patch quilt. I didn't look for binding fabric yet.

This is the one with the rooster fabric on the back. The quilt was 72" x 88" before quilting so it will need 8 strips of binding. I'll be searching for a binding piece large enough today.

I got all of these squares pressed and now I need to decide whether I'm going to sew them into 4 ...

Fun sewing triangles................... from Exuberant Color

I cut light triangles from Marcia Derse fabrics for my night sewing.

In the afternoon I sorted the pile of triangles. There are 4 of some and 8 or 12 of others.

Last night I paired the light triangles with dark ones that were cut a couple years ago. I got a lot of them sewn while I watched TV. I need to turn on the iron today and get all from both nights pressed.

I have my annual pacemaker checkup this morning.

First quilt top for October 2026........... from Exuberant Color

The Fractured quilt top is finished except for the staystitching around the perimeter. I think maybe it should be called Shock Wave or Epicenter.

Last night I got the second shelf of green batik fabrics sorted. About half of the fabrics were turquoise on that shelf. I now have 65 pieces to choose from for my future project. The top 2 are frog prints and both of them are at least 2 yards. They will probably be used as part of the backing.

2 days of gloom.............. from Exuberant Color

It's hard to get motivated when it is dark and rainy out, having to turn on lights during the day. The last I checked we had 2.5" of rain for the 2 days but we got quite a bit more after I checked.

Yes the flannel is back on the design boards and my photography wall is back. You can see here I stand behind my longarm to take the photos. I'm hoping to get the longarm working again soon.

I did some die cutting and then came up to the studio and started sewing the binding on the Marca Derse Other 16 Patch quilt.

First finish in June 2026................... from Exuberant Color

It didn't take long to finish the binding (by machine) yesterday. We had some hefty storms again so my machine was unplugged most of the afternoon. There were tornadoes north and south of me. This was one time I was happy the storm split and didn't touch us.

The rain didn't finish until 8 p.m. so I don't know the total for yesterday. The dew point started dropping (from 73) after 8 and was down to 60 by bedtime. Now we will have some cooler and drier weather for a while.

Binding started................ from Exuberant Color

I didn't get started on anything early in the day and my machine was unplugged for a few hours in the afternoon while storms rolled through. Another .9" of rain. A second round came through in the evening so the machine was unplugged again. Finally later in the evening there was just light rain so I got busy on this binding. Since the binding is black and the background of the backing is black, I decided it was best to do it all by machine. I should be able to finish it today.

Trimming and choosing binding................ from Exuberant Color

Monday I got two quilts back from my longarmer and the one made with Marcia Derse fabric was trimmed yesterday.

I chose one of Marcia Derse's Marble Run fabrics for the binding. It is cut and ready to sew onto the quilt.

I had company most of the day yesterday and we went through a lot of old photographs. We were joined by more family for pizza in the evening.

Lots going on................ from Exuberant Color

I started the day by calling the plumber for 2 problems, then went grocery shopping. When I got home they called and said the plumber would be here in a half hour. That's amazing...so soon! He was done in an hour and a half and I have no more leaks.

One decision made................ from Exuberant Color

After a little prodding by a friend I realized I didn't want to find separator strips like I used on the original quilt I made 10 years ago. Last night I sewed the three sections together. After trimming the side points it will be about 46" x 62". I'm thinking about adding a border, but we shall see how long that takes.

I also cut 1.5" purple squares yesterday and added them to the few that were cut previously.

First quilt top for April 2026................... from Exuberant Color

Kaleidoscope 1 top is sewn. I'm thinking of 2 and 3 so this could be a series. I won't use Marcia Derse fabric for the next 2. This one is 51.5" x 72". I ended up with the 35 blocks like I originally planned. I usually don't use the same background fabrics all through a quilt but this time I had 2 nice light ones, also Marcia Derse fabric. Final layout, time to sew................... from Exuberant Color

This is the final layout for this quilt top. I could move pieces forever trying to not have the same fabrics near each other, but I decided this is good enough.

I started webbing it last night and got the 4 long seams top to bottom sewn and am now sewing cross rows. Three done, 3 to go. I need to finish this top today so I can get back to the other one and get the last 3 fabrics chosen for it.

Cutting and third layout................... from Exuberant Color

All three sets needed more pieces. I actually cut a few more than I needed so if I need to make a substitute block I'm all set. I ended up finishing the 2 partial blocks and made 6 new blocks last night. I haven't pressed them yet so they haven't made it to the design wall.
